"How do waves mix the ocean? Under certain conditions, long parallel streaks are observed in the ocean. The streaks are indicative of convergence zones and overturning cells. One of the mechanisms that could cause these convergence zones are Langmuir cells that form when winds are aligned with waves in the ocean. The ocean is a windy place and the Southern Ocean experiences persistent strong winds and large waves - conditions that are conducive to the formation of Langmuir cells that are associated with enhanced turbulence. Models that include Langmuir turbulence, improve the representation of the ocean surface boundary layer in regions where the boundary layer is too shallow, yet observing the effects of Langmuir turbulence has been elusive. This talk unpacks the physics behind the turbulent kinetic energy budget in the ocean surface boundary layer using observations in the Southern Ocean and numerical simulations to explain why."
