radiance

For ocean optics, the radiance field is the fundamental radiative quantity; with a full knowledge of the radiance field and its variation in time and space, all other optical properties can be derived. It is also the quantity sensed by visual systems by organisms underwater and hence has direct biological importance as well. Despite this fundamental importance, direct measurements are very few, largely because of the vast dynamic range required (order 107 or more). I present and interpret here some recent observations of the underwater radiance field from several locations based on a new CMOS-based optical camera system and discuss the significance more broadly for investigations of optical variability in the sea.
