Community Services

Tide Tables

Service offered to the community based on models built based on more than 50 years of data collection at the Cananéia Bases "Dr João de Paiva Carvalho" and Ubatuba "Clarimundo de Jesus". The Tables are made available annually by the teachers: Dr. Afrânio Rubens de Mesquita and Prof. Dr. Joseph Harari.

Oceanographic Instrumentation Laboratory - IOL

The Oceanographic Instrumentation Laboratory offers repair and construction services for scientific equipment used in oceanographic research for the USP internal and external community. Offers internships and training in the handling of equipment.

Requests

Calibration center

In order to meet the need for calibration services for its instruments, USP's Oceanographic Institute implemented its Calibration Center . This Center has also been responding to calibration requests from institutions external to the University, such as other research centers, Brazilian Navy agencies and public and private companies, nationwide.

Currently, the Center is equipped to perform testing and gauging of sensors for temperature, conductivity / salinity and pressure of oceanographic instruments.

Oceanographic Data Laboratory

The purpose of LabDados is: to keep equipment for recording oceanographic and meteorological observations, installed in the “Dr. João de Paiva Carvalho ”- Cananéia (SP) - south coast of São Paulo and“ Clarimundo de Jesus ”- Ubatuba (SP) - north coast of São Paulo - belonging to IOUSP; compile the data transmitted from the research bases to the IOUSP headquarters in Cidade Universitária; process the data on a preliminary basis; archive the data in a database; make oceanographic and meteorological data available to users.

 LabDados maintains a website for the dissemination of its activities, www.labdados.io.usp.br , which allows communication with interested parties and exchanges of information, including the list of data maintained. LabDados also publishes an annual electronic publication with basic information and data processing.

The data obtained and archived by LabDados are made available to the scientific community and the general public, both through the website and through its digital supply.

The Microorganisms Collection Aidar & Kutner (BMAK)

is an ex situ collection of marine microalgae isolated from Brazilian waters and from other countries as well. BMAK provides inoculum of the strains to public and private Brazilian institutions for teaching and research purposes. Find more information at clicking here.

IOUSP Oceanographic Museum

The Oceanographic Museum has an exhibition module that can be taken outside the USP Oceanographic Institute.

  • Expo-Antarctica: composed of about 50 photographic panels that portray the scientific expeditions and research carried out by USP's Oceanographic Institute in Antarctica since 1983;
  • Prof. Besnard: photographic exhibition that portrays the history of Oceanographic science in Brazil and its responsible.

About 1000 bottles with marine organisms belonging to different phyla, taxidermized or preserved in alcohol, are available for loan. The material can be used in science fairs, practical classes and thematic exhibitions, and must be collected under the responsibility of the Director of the educational institution, through a simple letter to the Oceanographic Museum of IOUSP.

Biological Collection

The Biological Collection "Prof. Edmundo F. Nonato" from IOUSP has a huge number of samples cataloged and made available for research. Its collection consists of four categories:

  • Biological Materials;
  • Non-biological materials;
  • Electronic Databases;
  • Stock Photo of Marine Organisms.

Biological samples are made up of organisms from various taxonomic groups in their different stages of the life cycle, belonging to plankton, benthos and nectar. Various organs, structures and tissues (stomachs, gonads, livers, otoliths, etc.) are also part of the collection. Non-biological material consists of boards (technical-scientific drawings and photographs of scientific works) and dead files (collection forms).

To date, approximately 45,000 marine biological samples of ichthyoplankton, zooplankton, ichthyofauna and benthic organisms have been cataloged and deposited in the collection.

Advisory and Consulting

The IO has several specialists trained to provide advice on projects and environmental issues related to the sea. The involvement of IOUSP professionals in Advisory and Consulting activities is part of the framework of Community Service Extension activities that IOUSP offers. Performance by demand from Government Agencies, Institutions and Private Agencies to address environmental issues related to the marine environment.
