Re: Third International Symposium on the Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Oceans – Santos City, March 23-27, 2015

Dear Dr. Brandini,

I am writing on behalf of the three international primary international sponsors (PICES – North Pacific Marine Science Organization; ICES – International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and IOC – Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO) to express our gratitude to the primary local sponsor and hosts (IOUSP - Instituto Oceanográfico, Universidade de São Paulo) of this important event. The Symposium attracted 284 participants from 38 countries. We think it was a great success and we have had very positive feedback from the participants.

A critical success factor in the outcome of such symposia is the quality of the contributions of the local hosts and in this instance, the local host team was outstanding! Prof. Dr. Michel Michaelivitch de Mahiques and Prof. Dr. Alexander Turra played critical roles from the very beginning in 2013 and worked tirelessly on all aspects of local arrangements and planning, including fund-raising. As the meeting approached, they switched into a higher gear, ensuring that all aspects of the preparations were completed prior to the meeting.

During the meeting Dr. Mahiques and Dr. Turra and their team of volunteers (Oc. Marina Ferreira Mourão Santana - master student at IOUSP; Biol. Marilia Nagata Ragagnin - master student at IOUSP; Biol. Lucas Barbosa - technician at IOUSP and Ac. Rafael Romaneli - undergraduate student at UNIMONTE) worked side-by side with staff from the PICES Secretariat to attend to all the details that needed to be addressed to keep the symposium on track and running smoothly.

Your staff and students were wonderful representatives of your Institute, your University and your country. The foreign participants returned to their home countries with very positive impressions of Brazil and the quality of your staff and students.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Laura Richards
Chairman
